Walk, Ride, and Roll to School Classes

Walk, Ride, and Roll to School

Encourage your students to take active transportation to school with a free class!

The iCommute Walk, Ride, and Roll to School program offers free classes and events for public or private K-12 schools and youth organizations in the San Diego region. These classes are designed to teach students skills and safety to build confidence and encourage active transportation choices. Our goal is to increase the number of children who walk, bike, skate, or scooter to school; raise awareness of the benefits of more active forms of transportation; and promote pedestrian and bike safety.

If you are a parent who is interested in bringing Walk, Ride, and Roll to School to your child's school or youth organization, please download a flier to share with your school administrator. Only school administrators or youth organization coordinators may register.

Register your school or youth organization for a class or event:

  • Safety Assembly (virtual or in-person) - The presentation includes a helmet fitting demonstration and teaches students the basics of walking and biking safely to school.
  • E-bike Safety Assembly (virtual or in-person) - This assembly includes rules of the road for all bike riders but focuses specifically on regulations for e-bikes and tips about where to ride and how to ride an e-bike safely and legally.
  • Bike Rodeo (in-person) - The class is focused around the importance of seeing, being seen and remaining under control at all times when riding a bicycle. This is achieved through a series of bicycle handling drills and simulations of traffic situations where students will have the opportunity to practice bike handling.

  • Bike and Traffic Safety for Kids (online modules) - Geared towards K-5, these interactive video lessons include rules of the road, signs and symbols, helmets and safety, and riding skills. Each module can be completed in school or at home in under 10 minutes.

  • Bike Friendly Driver Class (virtual or in-person) - Geared towards high school students, this class teaches students about the road rules that apply to users of both bikes and cars, so that they are well equipped to share the roads safely and legally.

There are many benefits to participating in a Walk, Ride, and Roll to School class:

  • Improve children's awareness about taking active forms of transportation to and from school
  • Teach children about walking, biking, and skateboarding safety
  • Improve children’s health – increased physical activity can help combat childhood obesity
  • Show parents and students safe neighborhood routes to school and how to start a group biking or walking train
  • Encourage active transportation to help reduce traffic congestion in school zones, which can improve safety
  • Instill healthy habits in children’s commute decisions
  • Reduce bike theft by teaching children best practices for locking bikes
