Free rides for the military. Waze Carpool is reimbursing driver's commutes and offering riders free rides to and from military bases for one month in 2018!

To be paid for your commute as a carpool driver, download and open the Waze app. Begin signing up by tapping the person-shaped icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. You will receive up to $0.54 per mile for picking up others commuting to or from base. You can continue to receive up to $0.54 per mile even after the promotion has ended.

To ride to or from base for free, download and open the Waze Carpool app. Follow the signup instructions to request your first ride. Any Waze Carpool trips taken to or from base during the designated month will be free through the app – no promo code needed!

Free trips for riders calendar:

  • August: MCAS Miramar and Naval Base San Diego
  • September: Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton
  • October: Marine Corps Recruit Depot and Naval Base Coronado
  • November: Naval Base Point Loma and U.S. Coast Guard

You can choose who you carpool with by searching through profiles or looking for coworkers. Unlike traditional rideshare apps, both the Waze Carpool driver and rider get to approve each other prior to being paired for a commute. And as an added perk, carpoolers can take advantage of regional carpool benefits like HOV and Express Lanes, Park & Ride lots, and the Guaranteed Ride Home program.

Let Uncle Sam help pay your way. The Transportation Incentive Program (TIP) is a federally subsidized benefit that covers vanpools and all San Diego County transit systems – the bus, Trolley, COASTER, and SPRINTER. This benefit currently pays up to $260 per month; participants can commute for little or no out of pocket cost.

All active duty Navy and Marine Corps personnel, Department of the Navy (DON) civil servants, and Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) civilian employees are eligible. Members of Reserve Components serving on active duty for more than 30 days also are eligible. Participants can save more than $3,000 on their commute costs each year. It is free and easy to sign up; apply online with your Government CAC ID. Additional information is available on the Navy Region Southwest webpage.

Join a vanpool. Many military vanpool participants commute for little or no cost. A vanpool could help you save money on gas and reduce wear and tear on your personal vehicle. The SANDAG Vanpool Program even provides a subsidy of up to $400 per month to offset the lease price, in addition to the TIP benefit of up to $260 per month.
